Export & Print turns your story into something to hand over: a script to read or keep writing, a one-sheet or packet to pitch with, a poster or cards for the wall, or a report of its numbers. Each one has its own settings and a preview that shows exactly what you'll get.
Open Export & Print
- From inside a story: the Menu in its header, then Export & Print….
- From My Stories: the ⋮ menu on the story's card, then Export & Print….
- To go straight to the script: Print Screenplay in the story's header, or Cmd + P (Ctrl + P on Windows). Both open the Screenplay card.
The story's owner and editors can export it. On a story its owner has made copyable, anyone who can see it can too (see Make a Story Copyable). If you can't export a story, Cmd + P prints its script pages as they are.
The window opens on every kind of export, grouped as Script, Pitch, For the wall and Insights. Each card says what it makes and how you can take it away, such as PDF, Print or .docx.
Above them, Recent lists the setups you've exported from this story before. Click one to start from exactly those settings, or its × to take it off the row.
Set Up an Export
- Click a card. Its settings are on the left and its preview on the right.
- Change the settings. The preview follows each change, so what you see is what you'll get. For a document with pages, click a page in the rail beside the preview to jump to it.
- Click a button in the bar at the bottom: Download PDF, Print, a file such as Download .docx, or one of the ways under More.
- The bar says how big the result is, such as the pages and scenes it holds.
- While a big file builds, the bar shows its progress and a Cancel button.
- Print opens your browser's print window. In Safari it opens the PDF in a new tab to print from.
- Prewrite remembers each card's settings for this story. Click All export options to go back to every card.
Settings Many Cards Share
- Theme: Light or Dark. Dark looks striking on screen, but it uses a lot of ink, and the bar says so.
- Scenes: Show All, or Custom to tick the scenes you want, a whole act at a time if you like.
- High-resolution images: full-size images, sharp at print size, in a bigger file.
- Crop marks: runs the artwork past the edge of the page and marks where to trim, for a print shop.
Script
Screenplay
Your script as PDF pages, laid out as in the Page view, so its page numbers match the app's.
- Title page: a title page with the story's title and credits. Change the title, or add a Note to the reader (optional), for this export only.
- Scenes: the whole script or the scenes you pick.
- Add scene numbers. Chosen scenes keep their original numbers.
- Add story info (the logline and synopsis) and Add character list, after the last scene.
Final Draft, Word and Fountain
Files to keep writing in: Final Draft (.fdx), Word (.docx) and Fountain (.fountain). Under What goes in, tick the fields to include and, for Final Draft and Fountain, choose where each one goes. The preview shows the file as that program will. See Download a Story for where each field can go.
Prewrite Archive
The whole story in one file: its scenes, characters, plot threads, settings and images. There's nothing to choose. Keep it as a backup, or import it to bring the story back.
Pitch
One-sheet
Your story on a single page for a producer's desk. It starts in Dark, with your key image blurred behind the page (Backdrop).
- On the sheet: tick what goes on it: Key image, Logline, The shape of the story (your acts to scale, with the story beats marked), Key moments, Story info (your Home page's sections, in its order), Top cast, Comparables and Contact details.
- Comparables and Contact details each get a box to type in. Your contact details start with your name and email.
- Key moments: Story beats lists the scenes you've marked with a story beat; All lets you pick any scene.
- Top cast: the characters who appear and speak the most. Untick anyone you don't want, or choose All to pick from everyone.
Everything you tick stays on the page. When there's a lot, the text gets smaller, never cut, down to the smallest size that's still easy to read, and the layout rearranges to make room. The bar tells you how tight it is. If it still doesn't fit, it names what takes the most room, so you can leave something off.
Story Packet
One PDF to send: a cover with your logline and theme, then the parts you tick under In the packet: Character Sheets, Timeline Poster, Scene Cards and Screenplay.
- Each part uses its own card's settings. To change the character sheets in the packet, change them on the Character Sheets card.
- The packet's Theme applies to every part except the script, which always prints black on white.
- Timeline and cards format: Letter cuts the timeline and the cards into letter pages to print and pin up; One page gives each one a single large page, to read whole in a PDF reader.
Pitch Deck
The Pitch Deck is listed as Coming soon to Pro. It can't be opened yet.
For the Wall
Timeline Poster
Your Timeline view on paper: every scene from left to right, with the rows you see in the app.
- Format: Letter, Tabloid or A3 cut the poster into sheets that meet like a puzzle when you pin them up. A small map in each sheet's corner shows where it goes, and the preview shows the whole wall or the sheets one by one. The Size sets how big the text prints, and so how many sheets it takes.
- One page: the whole timeline on a single page, in a Size you choose (or your own), to share as a PDF or have a print shop print.
- Content: starts with the rows your Timeline view shows. Choose Custom to leave some out.
- Under More: PowerPoint (.pptx), the poster as a slide.
Scene Cards
Index cards to print, cut and pin to a corkboard, looking as your Cards view does.
- Format and Size, as for the poster. On sheets, every act starts on a new sheet; One page gives the whole board, each act a band of its cards.
- Card content: the one field each card shows, cut where a card stops before More. Everything else on the card follows your Cards view.
- Add cut guides (on sheets): lines to cut along.
Character Sheets
A page per character: their photo, details and bio, the scenes they're in, and who they're most often with.
- Characters: Top cast to start with the main characters, or All to pick from everyone. Filter narrows the list.
- Add a quote: a line each character says, picked for you from their dialogue. Click a character to choose another line.
- Backdrop: each character's headshot, softly blurred, behind the side column, and their cover photo, if they have one, behind the page.
Insights
Story Report
Your Stats view on paper: the same numbers, in three parts.
- The overview: your pages (counted as in the Page view), scenes, characters and words, your act balance, and each scene chart from your Stats view.
- Story composition: your breakdowns (such as gender, settings and overall tone), and how many scenes each character is in.
- Dialogue analysis: who has the most lines, and each one's share.
Untick a part under In the report to leave it out. Under More, Numbers as CSV downloads the numbers for a spreadsheet.
Plans
- The Script cards are for every plan.
- One-sheet and Story Packet come with Premium and Pro.
- The For the wall cards and the Story Report come with Pro.
A card your plan doesn't include shows its plan, with a lock. You can still open it, change its settings and see the preview. Its bar then has an upgrade button, such as Upgrade to Pro, where the downloads would be. See Plans & Billing.
