Story Features
Story features hold the details of the story as a whole. You fill them in in the story's Edit Window (click an item on the Home view), and most of them show on the Home view. See Edit Home View Content for the steps.
Features are installed per story, so yours may not have all of these. The story's owner and editors add or remove them in Advanced Settings › Layout, on the Home layout and the Story editor (see Managing Features).
Empty sections show a short note to the owner and editors, so there's something to click: most say None added., and some have their own wording, like NO GENRE ADDED. or Not added. Readers of the story don't see them. An empty title shows Untitled to everyone.
Title (required)
A simple text input in the story's Edit Window for editing your title. The value appears as prominent text on the Home view and is not labeled.
Images (required)
An image gallery in the story's Edit Window. The Primary image, or the first one if none is primary, is the background of the Home view and the story's thumbnail in My Stories. See Add a Primary Image.
Genre
A tags input in the story's Edit Window with a list of genres to choose from. Click the menu icon beside the field to tick genres from the full list, or start typing to see suggestions. You can also type a genre of your own and press Enter. The genres appear on the Home view.
Logline
A text box in the story's Edit Window for a brief description of your main character's predicament. It shows on the Home view.
Theme
A text box in the story's Edit Window for describing the story's core message. It shows on the Home view.
For tracking how each scene handles the theme, see the scene Theme feature.
Buttons
A row of buttons on the Home view: one for each of your story's views, then Slideshow, which opens the slideshow, and Share, which opens the story's sharing options. The view buttons follow your story's template, and the section is not labeled.
Scene Slides
A thumbnail gallery on the Home view showing the scenes you've added to the Slideshow. Click a thumbnail to open that scene in the Edit Window; readers of the story go to it in the slideshow instead. When there are more than three, Show More shows the rest.
The owner and editors see a list button (Edit) beside the heading. It lists your scenes by act: click scenes to add them to the slideshow or take them out. The list stays open, so you can pick several. You can also do this one scene at a time (see Toggle Slideshow Visibility).
Characters
A row of character headshots on the Home view listing every character in your story. Point at a headshot to see the character's name, and click it to open the character in the Edit Window (readers see the character's details without the fields to edit).
The same feature lists your characters in the Stats view, where you can select one or more to highlight the scenes they appear in.
Emotions
A tags input in the story's Edit Window (the Emotion Tags feature) for the emotions your characters feel. Type an emotion and press Enter or a comma to add it. There's no preset list: every tag is your own.
On the Home view, the Emotions section shows the story's emotions together with every emotion tagged on your scenes (see the scene Emotions feature).
Written By
A profile section on the Home view with the story owner's pen name, profile picture, professional title and bio.
- The owner always sees it, with a switch between Bio Included and Bio Hidden, and, while the bio is included, an Edit Profile link to change the profile itself (see Edit Your Profile).
- Everyone else sees it only when the bio is included and the owner has a pen name. If the owner's profile is public, it has a View Profile link.
From Templates
Some templates come with extra story features. If your story has one, it's listed under Custom Features in the Layout tab, where you can move it or remove it. Once it's removed entirely, it can't be added back.
Series Title
A text input for the title of the series your story belongs to. It shows on the Home view.
Description and Synopsis
Text boxes for a description of the story and a brief summary of its plot. Both show on the Home view.
Credits and Author
Credits is a text box, in its own section of the Edit Window, for listing everyone who contributed to the story. Author is a text input for the author's name. Both show on the Home view.
Business Details
Fields for stories about a company or product. Each is a text input or text box in the story's Edit Window, and shows on the Home view:
- Company Name and Product Name.
- Core Message: the key takeaway of the story.
- Application: how the core message relates to the audience and their current situation.
- Value Proposition: the benefits the company's products and services deliver to its customers.
- Mission Statement: the purpose of the organization and how it serves its customers.
Tag Lists
Tags inputs for Features & Benefits, Keywords, Key Concepts and Tags. Type a tag and press Enter or a comma to add it.
On the Home view, each one shows the story's own tags together with the same kind of tags from your scenes, so a scene tagged with a key concept adds it to the story's Key Concepts too.
Sources and Related Links
Link lists, each in its own section, showing on the Home view. Like the Links Section, they can't be edited in the Edit Window yet.
Custom
These are the kinds of feature you can create yourself (see Managing Features). You name each one when you create it, except the three charts: a chart takes its title from the feature it shows.
Text Input
A custom text box in the story's Edit Window that displays its content on the Home view.
Select Input
A custom dropdown menu in the story's Edit Window that displays its selected value on the Home view. You type its options, one per line, when you create it.
Tags Input
A custom tags input in the story's Edit Window: type a tag and press Enter or a comma to add it. The tags show on the Home view.
When you create it, Include Tags From lets you pick scene and character tag features for it to collect. The Home view then shows those tags too, gathered from across the story.
Links Section
A list of links on the Home view, titled My Links unless you name it. Each link opens in a new tab.
ℹ️ Note
Links can't be added or changed in the Edit Window yet: the field shows Not editable yet. Links a story already has still show on the Home view.
Pie Chart
A chart for the Stats view that shows how your scenes or characters split across the options of a custom Select Input. You choose the select input when you create it, from the Story Stats layout.
Range Chart
A Stats overview for a scene range, such as a custom Range Input or a Dynamics gauge: of all the changes from one scene to the next, how much went up and how much went down. Up and Down take the names the range has in its settings, if you've given it some.
Bar Chart
A Stats bar chart with one bar per scene. Depending on the field you choose, it shows the word count of a scene text field or the value of a scene range.
