Account Settings
Settings is where you change your name, avatar, password and preferences. To open it, click your name at the bottom of the side menu, then choose Settings. It opens over whatever page you're on.
The categories are listed down the left-hand side (across the top on a narrow screen):
- Account: General, Password and Public Profile.
- Subscription: Plan and Billing. These are explained in Plans & Billing.
Each category saves on its own. When you change something that needs saving, a bar slides up at the bottom with Save Changes. If you close Settings without saving, those changes are dropped. While the bar is showing, clicking outside the window doesn't close it. The close button or Esc still do.
General
Profile
- Avatar: click the pencil on the picture to upload one, or to replace or remove it. Images can be up to 4 MB. Your avatar is also the profile picture on your public page.
- First name and Last name: both are required.
Click Save Changes to keep your changes.
Preferences
Preferences apply the moment you change them. There's nothing to save.
- Appearance: System follows your device's light or dark setting; Light and Dark fix it. It's saved to your account, so it follows you to other devices.
- Language: the language Prewrite shows its menus and labels in: English, Español, Français or हिन्दी. Your stories stay as you wrote them. When you're signed out, the globe in the top menu of Prewrite's public pages, such as the home page and this knowledge base (Language), changes it too. Signed in, use this setting.
- Show locked stories: when your account moves to the Free plan, all but one of your stories are locked, and hidden from your story list. Turn this on to see them again, marked as locked (see Locked Stories). This setting is kept by the browser you set it in.
Notifications
Mailing list: turn it on to get important updates and messages from Prewrite by email. Click Save Changes after you change it.
Every email from the mailing list also has an unsubscribe link. It opens a page with your email already filled in and an optional Reason box; click Submit and you're off the list, whether or not you're signed in. To get the emails again, turn Mailing list back on here.
Password
- Open Settings and choose Password.
- Type your Current password.
- Type your New password and type it again in Confirm new password. It must be 6–32 characters, and different from your current one.
- Click Save Changes. The button shows once all three fields are filled in correctly.
The eye in each field shows or hides what you typed. If you've forgotten your current password, sign out and reset it instead (see Reset Your Password).
Cookies
In some regions, including the EU and the UK, Prewrite asks before it stores anything optional in your browser. A bar at the bottom of the page offers three choices:
- Accept all turns everything on.
- Necessary only keeps only what the app needs to work.
- Cookie settings opens a window where you choose for yourself.
The × in the bar's corner (Not now) puts the question off for now; the bar comes back on your next visit. Cookie policy opens the full policy.
In Cookie settings, each kind of cookie has a switch. Necessary is Always on: it keeps you signed in and remembers your language and theme. Functional covers the live chat and embedded videos, and Analytics tells us, in aggregate, how the site is used. Open What this stores under each one to see exactly which services it covers. Click Save my choices to keep your choices.
To change your mind later, click Cookie settings at the bottom of any public page, or on the cookie policy page.
Public Profile
Public Profile edits the page other people see at your profile link: its visibility, custom URL, pen name, bio, links and the stories you show on it. The steps are in Edit Profile, and the page itself is described in Public Profiles.
Plan and Billing
Plan is where you upgrade or downgrade, and Billing shows your plan, payment card and transactions. Both are explained in Plans & Billing.
If your plan is managed for you, such as a team account or a plan Prewrite set up for you, Plan doesn't show: contact support to change it.
