Plans & Billing
Prewrite has three plans: Free, Premium and Pro. You can start free and change plans whenever you like, from Settings.
The Plans
| Plan | Price | What you get | |---|---|---| | Free | $0 | 1 story, Script exports: PDF, Final Draft, Word, Fountain, Read-only share links | | Premium | $14.99 a month, or $149.99 a year | Everything in Free, plus Unlimited stories, One-sheet and Story Packet exports and Import Prewrite story files (.osf) | | Pro | $29.99 a month, or $299.99 a year | Everything in Premium, plus Invite collaborators, Timeline Poster, Scene Cards and Character Sheets, Story Report, also as CSV and Pro support |
A yearly plan saves about 17% compared with paying monthly. The same plans are on the pricing page: choose Pricing from the account menu (click your name at the bottom of the side menu).
What the Free plan can't do:
- More than one story. A Free account keeps one story. A story someone else shared with you counts toward it once you've saved an edit to it, and it keeps counting even if you're later removed from the story. If you reach the limit without a story of your own, Prewrite says so.
- Add collaborators. Sharing a story with people who can edit it is a Pro feature (see Sharing and Permissions).
- Import a Prewrite Story (.osf) file. That needs a paid plan. Importing a screenplay doesn't (see Screenplay Importer).
When You Reach a Limit
When you try something your plan doesn't include, Prewrite tells you which plan does. For example:
- starting a new story, copying one, starting one from a template or importing a file when you already have your one Free story. Copying a story, importing a file or starting one from the Templates page opens the upgrade window straight away. Picking a template in the new story window says You've reached the free plan's story limit instead, with View Upgrade Options to open it;
- adding collaborators on a Free or Premium plan: the View Upgrade Options link in the sharing window;
- opening a locked story (see Locked Stories).
The upgrade window names the plan you need, what it adds and its price:
- Upgrade to Premium — $14.99/mo (or Pro) goes straight to checkout for that plan.
- Compare all plans shows all three plans, so you can choose another.
- See pricing opens the pricing page in a new tab.
- Not now closes it.
Upgrade Your Plan
- Open the upgrade options. Choose Upgrade from the account menu, or open Settings and choose Plan. An upgrade window's buttons open the same place.
- Pick Monthly or Yearly at the top. Your current plan is marked Current plan.
- Click Upgrade to Premium or Upgrade to Pro on the plan you want. Checkout opens.
- Check the plan and its price under Details. You can still switch between Monthly and Yearly here.
- Under Payment method, enter your card, or use the card you've saved (Update Card changes it). The card form shows One sec… over the card for a moment while it connects to the payment service. If your saved card has expired, checkout opens straight on the card form and says so: enter a new card to continue.
- If you have a promo code, type it under Have a promo code? and click Apply. The discounted price shows beside the plan. Remove takes the code off again.
- Click Secure Checkout.
When the payment goes through, you'll see Thank you for your purchase! with the details of your purchase, and your new plan's features are ready to use. Your new plan shows beside your name in the side menu straight away. Back on Plan, a banner confirms the plan you're on and your next billing date.
To move your current plan between monthly and yearly billing, pick the other one at the top of Plan: your plan's card then offers Switch to annual or Switch to monthly.
If you already pay for a plan and change to another, you get a pro-rated refund for your current one, and the new one starts right away.
ℹ️ Note
If the purchase is declined, check your card details, or ask your bank. With a promo code applied, try removing it and checking out again.
Downgrade to Free
A Free account keeps one story. When you downgrade, you choose which one.
- Open Settings and choose Plan.
- Click Downgrade to Free on the Free card.
- Compare Plans: what you'll lose and what you'll keep. Click Next.
- Choose Story: read the note, tick I have read the above statement and I agree., then pick the story to keep. Click Next. (If you own only one story, this step is skipped.)
- Confirm Downgrade: click Downgrade Now.
You get a pro-rated refund for the rest of your subscription. Cancel Downgrade leaves at any step without changing anything.
If you belong to a team, you'll see We'll handle this one for you instead of these steps. Moving to Free here would also lock the stories you made inside the team, for everyone on it, so we make the change for you: click Message us and tell us which story to keep. (If Prewrite can't check your teams, it asks you to Try again before it shows any steps.)
To go from Pro to Premium, click Downgrade to Premium on the Premium card instead. That goes through checkout, like an upgrade.
Collaborators stay on your stories when you downgrade to Free. On the story you keep, they carry on as before, and no one can open your locked stories until you upgrade. Switching to Premium is different: it removes every collaborator from your stories, and moving back to Pro doesn't bring them back. Checkout warns you before you switch.
Locked Stories
After a downgrade to Free, every story you own except the one you chose is locked. Locked stories are hidden from your story list, and taken off your public profile.
- To see them, turn on Show locked stories in Settings › General. They show as Locked, darkened.
- A locked story doesn't open. Clicking it offers the upgrade instead: upgrading unlocks your stories.
A story someone shared with you locks the same way when its owner's plan no longer covers it. It stays in Shared with me as a locked card, and clicking it explains why instead of offering an upgrade: yours wouldn't unlock it (see Sharing and Permissions).
Your locked stories are safe, and open again whenever you upgrade.
Billing
Open Settings and choose Billing. It shows:
- Your plan: its name, Status, any discount, and the Next charge (date and amount). Change plan goes to Plan. On the Free plan, the button is Upgrade.
- Payment method: the card you pay with, while you have a subscription. Click Update Card, enter the new card and save it.
- Transaction history: each charge and refund, with its date, plan, reference number, status and amount. Refresh reloads it.
When a subscription has been canceled, Billing shows the date it's paid through instead of the next charge.
When a Payment Doesn't Go Through
If a renewal charge fails, your plan is past due. Nothing locks: your plan's features stay on, and every story stays open, while the payment service retries the charge over the next days. What you'll see:
- Beside your name in the side menu, your plan is marked. Its tooltip, and the top of the account menu, read Payment past due. The menu offers Update payment first, which opens Billing.
- A window when you open a page of your account, such as My Stories or the Library, or a story: Your payment didn't go through, naming the card that was charged when Prewrite knows it. Update card replaces that card right there. Not now closes it until you open Prewrite again in a new tab.
- In Billing, your plan shows Status: Past due and the date it's Paid through, with a note that the last payment didn't go through. The note names the card it was billed to (Billed to •••• 1111). Its Update Card replaces that card, which may not be your default one.
To fix it, update your card, either from the window or from Billing. The next retry uses the new card; there's nothing else to do. Once you've updated it, Billing says the charge will be retried, and the window doesn't ask again unless a later charge fails too.
While a plan is past due you can't change plans: Plan shows Update your card first (or Waiting on the retry, once your card is updated) with Go to Billing. A new plan now would start a second subscription while the old one is still being charged.
If the charge never goes through, the plan ends and your account moves to Free (see the next section).
ℹ️ Note
If Billing shows an older subscription still past due alongside your current plan, click Message us. We'll cancel the old one before it charges you again.
If Your Plan Ends
When the retries run out, your paid plan ends and your account moves to Free: every story you own but one is locked (see Locked Stories). The next time you open My Stories or a story, a window says Welcome back, Alex, why the plan ended and how many stories are locked. It doesn't close until you choose:
- Restart Premium (or Pro): checkout opens in the window, on the plan you had. Pay with your saved card, or Update Card to use another. When it goes through, every story opens again. Your options goes back to the two choices.
- Continue on Free: stay on Free and choose the story to keep open. If two or more of your stories are still open, pick one and click Keep this story open; the others lock. If only one is open, that's the one you keep. To switch it, or if all of them are already locked, click Message us and we'll open the one you want.
If you belong to a team, both choices hand over to us: click Message us. Restarting or moving to Free here would also change the stories you made inside the team, for everyone on it.
The window comes once for each plan that ends. Moving to Free yourself, from Plan, never shows it.
Plans Managed for You
Some accounts can't change their plan from Settings:
- A team account. When you're signed in to a team, its plan is the team's. Billing says you're signed in to the team; click Switch to Personal Account to manage your own plan.
- A plan Prewrite set up for you. Billing shows it as Active, and it doesn't expire.
For these accounts there's no Plan category and no upgrade option. Where a plan limit applies, you'll see Contact support instead. It opens the live chat (or an email to contact@prewrite.com), so we can help.
