Hero's Journey Screenplay

A timeless pattern for adventure stories.

Overview

Popularized by Joseph Campbell, who was himself inspired by Carl Jung, this is perhaps the oldest story “template”. Many of the situations in The Hero’s Journey involve character archetypes that have been part of the human experience for millenia. Often referred to as the Monomyth, The Hero’s Journey is well-suited for adventure stories, tales where the hero leaves their home, encounters all sorts of problems, maybe slays a dragon or two, and returns home a changed hero. Screenplay examples include Star Wars, The Matrix, and Beowulf - pretty much anything with a superhero or a Greek god.
