Ordinary World
1.title cardThe opening text scroll sets up the story.
2.int. REBEL BLOCKADE RUNNER - main passagewayA tiny silver spacecraft, a Rebel Blockade Runner, races through space, firing lasers from the back of the ship. It is pursed by a giant Imperial Stardestroyer. Hundreds of deadly laserbolts streak from the Imperial Stardestroyer, causing the main solar fin of the Rebel craft to disintegrate.
Inside the Rebel ship, two robots, C-3PO and R2-D2 struggle to make their way down the shaky hall. C-3PO tells R2-D2 that escape will be impossible, since the damage has forced the Rebels to shut down the ship's main reactor.
The Imperial starship easily overtakes the small Rebel runner, which is drawn into the Imperial's underside dock. Stormtroopers blast open the door to the Rebel ship and a firefight ensues between them and the Rebel soldiers. The Stormtroopers' leader, Darth Vader, enters and surveys the damage.Notes: This first scene sets up Darth Vader is being scary and menacing. His entrance shows a great display of power, and suggests that he's someone to be feared - even his own Stormtroopers seem nervous around him.
Having him introduced in such a way makes it more effective when Leia stands up to him a few scenes later. This isn't an easy man to argue with, and the consequences could be grave.
3.INT. REBEL BLOCKADE RUNNERPrincess Leia puts a card into an opening in R2-D2's dome. R2-D2 leads C-3PO to the ship's escape pod as Stormtroopers round up the surviving Rebels. Darth Vader interrogates a Rebel officer, asking where the Death Star plans are. When he doesn't get an answer, he kills him. He orders the Stormtroopers to tear the ship apart until they find the plans.
Princess Leia is found by the Stormtroopers. She blasts them with her laser pistol, but they're able to hit her with a paralyzing ray.
4.INT. REBEL BLOCKADE RUNNER - SUBHALLWAYR2-D2 leads C-3PO into an escape pod, which takes off through space.
The captain of the Imperial starship sees the pod, but orders the pilot to not shoot at it, as there are no life forms detected inside it.
5.INT. REBEL BLOCKADE RUNNER - hallwayDarth Vader interrogates Princess Leia, asking her where the plans are. She insists that she's not a part of the Rebel alliance, but Darth Vader doesn't believe her. He keeps her alive, since she's his only link to finding the Rebel's secret base.
An officer notifies Vader that the plans aren't on the ship, but an escape pod was jettisoned during the fight. Vader assumes that Leia hid the plans on the escape pod, and orders the commander to send a detachment down to retrieve them.
6.EXT. tattooine - desertC-3PO and R2-D2 land on the desert planet. R2-D2 mentions a mission to C-3PO, but C-3PO is more concerned about quickly finding help. The two split up and C-3PO spots a transport in the distance. He calls out to it for help.
7.EXT. TATOOINE - ROCK CANYON - SUNSETR2-D2 is captured by Jawas and taken to their Sandcrawler, a huge tank-like vehicle.
8.INT. SANDCRAWLER - HOLD AREAR2-D2 is trapped inside with many other robots, one of which is C-3PO. As they reunite, the Sandcrawler starts moving.
9.EXT. TATTOOINE - DESERT - DAYStormtroopers find remnants of the escape pod, and notice droid parts and tracks leading away from the crash site.
10.EXT. TATOOINE - DUNESThe Sandcrawler stops and the Jawas let the robots out. The Jawas approach farmer Owen Lars and his nephew Luke, offering to sell their robots to them. Owen purchases C-3PO for his translation abilities, and purchases R2-D2 after the R2 they originally bought breaks down.Notes: In the original script, Luke was introduced much earlier, and his scenes were intercut with the opening sequence of the Imperials invading the Rebel ship. If that didn't change, it would have decreased the tension in the opening scene, and deterred focus away from the main conflict. Even though Luke is the main protagonist, his storyline only exists because of Leia's actions, so by introducing him afterwards, and doing so through him meeting the robots, it creates a more seamless transition between the fight in the sky and the story on the ground. We don't have to wonder how this character will play a part in the story, instead we know as soon as we meet him.
11.INT. LARS HOMESTEAD - GARAGE AREA - LATE AFTERNOONC-3PO tells Luke that he and R2-D2 were a part of the rebellion, which peaks Luke's interest. As Luke tries to repair R2-D2, a hologram projects from its face. It's an image of Princess Leia moments before giving R2-D2 the plans, saying "Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi. You're my only hope". R2-D2 reveals that he's the property of Obi-Wan Kenobi, and the hologram is a message for him. Luke knows someone named Ben Kenobi, and wonders if that's who R2-D2 is talking about.Theme: Stated
12.INT. LARS HOMESTEAD - DINING AREALuke tells Owen about the message, but Owen insists that Ben is just a crazy old man. He orders Luke to have R2-D2's memory erased. Owen says that Obi-Wan died around the same time as Luke's father, but refuses to elaborate.
Luke mentions that he wants to leave home to go to school, but Uncle Owen is discouraging of the idea, telling Luke that he needs him on the farm.Theme: Challenged
13.EXT. TATOOINE - LARS HOMESTEADLuke looks out into the sunset.
14.INT. LARS HOMESTEAD - GARAGEC-3PO tells Luke that R2-D2 has escaped.
15.EXT. TATOOINE - LARS HOMESTEADLuke searches for R2-D2, but he's nowhere to be found.
16.INT. LARS HOMESTEAD - PLAZAOwen asks Beru where Luke is. She tells him that he left early today, and took the droids with him.
17.EXT. TATOOINE - DESERT WASTELAND - LUKE'S SPEEDER - DAYLuke and C-3PO find R2-D2, but R2-D2 notifies them that they're being followed by sand people. Luke is attacked by one of them and knocked unconscious. The rest of the sand people are scared away by Ben Kenobi.
Luke tells Ben that R2-D2 claims he's the property of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Ben reveals that he's Obi-Wan Kenobi, but he hasn't been called that in many years. He doesn't recall ever owning a droid.Theme: Symbolized
Call to Adventure
18.INT. KENOBI'S DWELLINGBen tells Luke that his father and him were both Jedi Knights and fought in the clone wars, something that Owen had never told Luke. Ben gifts Luke his father's lightsaber, saying that his father wanted him to have it when he was old enough, but Owen wouldn't allow it.
Ben explains that a Jedi receives his power from the Force, an energy field that surrounds all living things and binds the galaxy together, but there is a dark side to the Force. He reveals that Luke's father died at the hands of Darth Vader, who was seduced by the dark side. He betrayed and murdered Luke's father, and continued to hunt down Jedis, making them nearly extinct.
R2-D2 plays the full hologram from Princess Leia, in which Leia delivers a message from her father to Ben. Her father fought with Ben in the clone wars, and he begs for his help in assisting the rebellion. Leia explains that she hid vital information inside of R2-D2, and her father will know how to retrieve it. R2-D2 must be delivered safely to her father, on the planet Alderaan.
Ben tells Luke that he should go with him to Alderaan. Due to Ben's old age, he can't do it alone.Theme: Explored
Refusal
19.INT. KENOBI'S DWELLING - CONTINUOUSLuke refuses to join Ben, stating that it's too far away and he needs to be back home for Owen. Luke offers to take him as far as Anchorhead, but that's it.Notes: This moment of refusal shows that Luke can get ahead of himself with his eagerness for adventure. He dreams about leaving his home, but as soon as the opportunity arises, he talks himself out of it, and thinks "rationally" about the situation and how it will affect his uncle, rather than following what he wants to do.Theme: Explored
20.INT. death star - conference roomThe governor tells the Imperial Senate that the Emperor has dissolved the council permanently, which was the last remnant of the old republic. The senators disagree on whether or not the Death Star is invincible, and if they should be worried about the Rebels having information about it.
Once Vader obtains the location of the Rebel base, they'll destroy it.
Meeting with the Mentor
21.EXT. TATOOINE - WASTELANDLuke and Ben come across the Jawas' Sandcrawler, which has been ransacked. Ben can tell that this was the Stormtroopers' doing.
Luke puts the pieces together that the Stormtroopers were looking for C-3PO and R2-D2, and rushes back home, knowing that they might've found out who the robots were sold to.
22.EXT. tattooine - LARS HOMESTEADLuke returns to find his home on fire, with the skeletons of his aunt and uncle lying on the ground.
23.INT. DEATH STAR - detention corridorDarth Vader starts his interrogation of Princess Leia.
Crossing The Threshold
24.EXT. TATOOINE - WASTELANDLuke tells Ben that he wants to go with him to Alderaan and become a Jedi like his father, since there's nothing left for him at home.Theme: Explored
25.EXT. TATOOINE - WASTELANDBen uses the Force to persuade the Stormtrooper guard that the droids with them are not the droids they're looking for. They're let into the city without issue.
They plan on finding a pilot in the city's spaceport that will be able to take them to Alderaan.
26.INT. TATTOOINE - MOS EISLEY - cantina - dayAt the bar, Luke is taunted by a criminal, who threatens to kill him. When the criminal's friend pulls out a blaster, Ben uses his lightsaber to cut its arm off.
Ben introduces Luke to Chewbacca, who's first-mate on a ship that might suit them. Chewbacca brings Luke and Ben to meet Han Solo, captain of the Millennium Falcon. Han says that their trip will cost extra if they want to avoid the Imperial Empire. Ben offers more than what Han asked for, and they make a deal.
An alien approaches Han, telling him that it's too late for him to pay back the money he owes Jabba, so he's going to kill him. Han reaches for his gun under the table and shoots the alien dead.Notes: There's a surprising amount of Han's backstory that's revealed in his introduction. Right after his conversation with Ben and Luke, we learn about his problems with Jabba via the alien, then we see him talk to Jabba himself. This helps to expand our knowledge of their world, since his life is so different from the other corners of the universe that have already been explored.
27.INT. DEATH STAR - control roomDarth Vader tells the council that it will be some time before they'll be able to extract any information out of Leia. In response, Tarkin orders for the ship's course to be set for Alderaan.

Tests, Allies and Enemies
31.INT. MILLENNIUM FALCON - CENTRAL HOLD AREABen tells Luke that he felt a disturbance in the force - as if millions of voices cried out in terror, and were suddenly silenced. Something terrible has happened.
Luke practices fighting with his lightsaber and Ben teaches him how to use the Force.Notes: This is the first time where we get to see the real scope of the Force, and how it has that connectivity that Ben explained previously.Theme: Symbolized
32.INT. death star - conference roomTarkin receives news that the Imperial scoutships have reached Dantooine, and although they found remains of a Rebel base, it's estimated that it's been deserted for some time. Tarkin orders for Leia to be killed immediately.Notes: This is the first of three "ticking clock" moments in the film. If Leia is to be killed immediately, then the team of protagonists has very little time to save her. And at this point, they don't even know the Death Star exists.
Approaching The Innermost Cave
33.INT. MILLENNIUM FALCON - COCKPITLuke & co. approach what is supposed to be Alderaan, but they end up in an asteroid field instead, with the planet nowhere to be found. Ben knows that the Empire is responsible for this, and they've destroyed the planet, but Han insists that they wouldn't have the power to do so.
An Imperial fighter flies by them and as they follow it, they see what they think is a small moon, but it's actually the Death Star. They get caught in the Death Star's tractor beam and are unable to escape, getting pulled into the station's docking bay.
34.INT. DEATH STAR - conference roomVader and Tarkin learn of the Millennium Falcon entering the Death Star, and are informed that it's the same ship that hastily left Mos Eisley. Vader presumes that they're attempting to give the plans back to Leia.
35.INT. DEATH STAR - docking bay 2037Imperial troops are unable to find anyone on board the ship. They notify Darth Vader of this, who orders for a scanning crew to take another look.
The Millennium Falcon crew are hiding in the ship's smuggling compartments, and they overtake the scanning crew, as well as the Stormtrooper guards, whose uniforms they steal.
36.INT. DEATH STAR - FORWARD BAY - COMMAND OFFICEChewbacca and Han take control of the command center, letting the rest of their crew in. R2-D2 plugs himself into the ship's computer outlet and is able to access the entire Imperial network. It finds the power beam that's holding the ship in place.
Ben decides to try and find the generator and shut it down, but he doesn't allow Luke to join him.
R2-D2 notifies the team that Princess Leia is in the ship's detention block, and scheduled to be terminated. Luke insists that they try to help her, but Han refuses to jeopardize his own safety - until Luke reminds him that she's a princess, and she's rich. If Han rescues her, there will likely be a great reward in return. Han agrees to help.
Ordeal
47.INT. DEATH STAR - MAIN FORWARD BAYLuke and Leia reunite with Han and Chewbacca. They watch as the Stormtroopers guarding the Millennium Falcon get distracted by something - the duel between Ben and Darth Vader. The team makes a run for the ship, and as Ben notices Luke close to safety, he stops fighting and allows Darth Vader to slice through him. An anguished Luke starts shooting aimlessly at the Stormtroopers as the rest of the team boards the ship.
Darth Vader is stumped as he notices that Ben's remains are not lying on the ground - he's disappeared.
Luke hears Ben's voice telling him to run, so he does. He safely boards the ship and they take off.Notes: Luke's immaturity and impulsive decision-making are put on display here, showing that he still has a lot to learn.Theme: Explored
Reward
48.EXT. MILLENNIUM FALCONLuke and Han fight off Imperial fighters and manage to destroy all four ships.Notes: Even though Han and Luke have done nothing but clash personalities throughout the duration of them knowing one another, this scene shows that they can still work together when needed, and push their own personal differences to the side. It also acts as a quick way to get Luke out of his slump, post-Ben's death.
49.INT. DEATH STAR - control roomDarth Vader and Tarkin track the Millennium Falcon as it moves throughout space.
50.INT. MILLENNIUM FALCON - COCKPITLeia insists that the Imperials let them escape, and they're tracking them. Han doesn't believe her.Notes: Once again, Leia outsmarts her companions. She counteracts the immaturity of Luke and the arrogance of Han, throwing a rational voice in the mix, and managing to kick Han down a peg, something that was much-needed.
The Road Back
51.INT. MASSASSI - MAIN HANGAR DECKThe team lands on the planet Yavin and Leia reunites with the Rebel commander. They scan R2-D2 and find a weakness within the Death Star. If one small fighter jet can maneuver through a trench and hit a 2-meter wide thermal exhaust port, it will start a chain reaction that will destroy the station. The commander orders the Rebels to prepare their ships.
52.INT. DEATH STARVader and Tarkin are less than 30 minutes away from Yavin.
53.INT. MASSASSI OUTPOST - MAIN HANGAR DECKHan decides to leave and not join the Rebels.
Luke reunites with a friend from back home, who's one of the Rebels now. Luke and the other Rebels get inside of their fighter jets and prepare for takeoff. R2-D2 joins Luke in the back of his jet.
Resurrection
54.EXT. SPACEThe Rebel fighter jets approach the Death Star. Back at the base, Leia and the other Rebels watch the radar as heavy fire rains in on the pilots, who are trying to find the way in. As Luke is pursued by an Imperial jet, he hears Ben's voice in his head, giving him guidance.
Rebel jets are destroyed left and right by Imperials, one of which is Darth Vader himself, piloting his own jet. One Rebel fires at the target but narrowly misses, and his jet goes down in the process.
The Death Star gets closer to Yavin, and Tarkin is ready to fire at any moment.
With backup from two Rebel pilots, Luke enters the narrow stretch towards the target. They're followed by Darth Vader, who shoots down one of them, and the other bails. Luke prepares to aim for the target using his targeting computer when he hears Ben in his head, telling him to use the Force and let go. Luke puts away his computer, putting his trust in the Force instead. Darth Vader fires at Luke, but ends up skimming the top of R2-D2 instead. As he goes to fire again, the Millennium Falcon, piloted by Han, appears behind him and destroys one of his wingmen's jets. The jet crashes into Vader's, causing Vader to lose control of his jet.
Han tells Luke that he's clear to fire. Luke fires and hits the target, then immediately flies away from the Death Star, along with the surviving Rebels and Han. Just as Tarkin gives the command for the Death Star to fire on Yavin, the Death Star explodes from within, decimating the entire station.Notes: Luke proves himself to be the hero. He and the other Rebels all had an equal shot of getting the job done - they were all in the same type of jet, they all had training - which allows Luke's skill set to rise to the top. His natural abilities combined with his training from Ben make it so it's believable that he was the one to defeat the Empire, for reasons other than him just being the protagonist of the story.
This scene also shows a vital part of Han's personality - his loyalty. If he truly abandoned his allies in the final hour, that would make him unlikable, and it would come across as cowardice. His loyalty is so strong that it's able to overpower his selfishness in this moment. Even though it seems like he cares about no one but himself, the right person can break open that facade.Theme: Stated
Return with Elixir
55.INT. MASSASSI OUTPOST - MAIN HANGARLuke returns to the Rebel base and garners a huge applause. He reunites with Leia, Han, and Chewbacca. A Rebel soldier assures C-3PO that R2-D2 will be fully repaired.
56.INT. yavin - massassi - throne room - dayLuke and Han are awarded medals for their service by Princess Leia. Chewbacca, C-3PO, and a fully repaired R2-D2 look upon. Luke and Han turn to the Rebel troops in the audience, who all applaud them.Theme: Symbolized

29.INT. MOS EISLEY SPACEPORT - DOCKING BAY 94The Stormtroopers approach the ship and start firing. Han fires back, shuts the door, and yells at Chewbacca to get them out. They're able to fly away into space, but they're immediately pursued by two Imperial cruisers. Han switches the ship into light speed, escaping the Imperials.
30.INT. DEATH STAR - control roomTarkin tells Leia that she, in a way, has determined which planet the Death Star will destroy first in their demonstration of power. He'll destroy her home planet of Alderaan, unless she gives up the location of the Rebel base. She tells him that it's on Dantooine. Despite having the information he wanted, he still orders for Alderaan to be fired upon, as Dantooine is too remote to be a true demonstration of power.
The order is carried out and Alderaan is blown to pieces.Notes: This "demonstration of power" shows just how cruel the Empire, and specifically Tarkin, is. Not only did he destroy an entire planet, but he did so after Leia gave him an answer. Even though it turns out that she lied, she seemingly betrayed her friends in that moment, giving Tarkin what he wanted, and he still turned around and punished her.
Darth Vader is propped up to be the biggest villain of them all, but it's interesting that the one carrying out most of the horrible actions is Tarkin, someone who could have just been an obedient sidekick to Vader. But instead of being a "yes man", he's just as bad, which makes their rule more terrifying. It's not just the leader that needs to be taken down, it's everyone.

INT. DEATH STAR - DETENTION AREA - ELEVATOR TUBEHan and Luke, disguised as Stormtroopers, walk a handcuffed Chewbacca through the ship, pretending he's their prisoner.
38.INT. DETENTION AREAThe officer guarding the detention block is suspicious of Luke and Han. Chewbacca starts opening fire on the crew; Luke and Han follow suit until they've cleared the room. In the process, they've set off an alarm, and a squad is on their way to investigate.

39.INT. DEATH STAR - conference roomDarth Vader tells Tarkin that Obi-Wan is here, as he senses a tremor in the Force. He announces that he will face him alone.
40.INT. DEATH STAR - DETENTION AREA - HALLWAYThe Imperial squad enters, and Han and Chewbacca fight them off. They hide with Luke and Leia. Luke radios C-3PO, who tells him that the whole station has been notified of their presence, but the only way out is the main entrance.
As the Stormtroopers close in, Leia orders for everyone to go down the garbage chute.Notes: Even though Leia is the one who needed saving, she consistently proves herself to be the best problem-solver out of the bunch, defying the "damsel in distress" archetype.
41.INT. DEATH STAR - garbage roomThe team is now stuck inside the station's garbage compactor. Luke is pulled down under the water by an eel-like creature, narrowly escaping drowning. The walls of the compactor begin to close on them. With no way out, Luke calls for C-3PO.

43.INT. DEATH STAR - power generator trenchBen turns off the power generator to the tractor beam.
44.INT. DEATH STAR - UNUSED HALLWAYThe team tries to make their way back to the ship, but they're cut off by a group of Stormtroopers. While Han and Chewbacca hold them off, Luke and Leia run in the opposite direction.

As Stormtroopers fire upon them, Luke uses a cable and a grappling hook to swing himself and Leia to the other side and they run through the exit.Notes: This scene is crucial in Luke's growth as a hero. It has nothing to do with the Force or with lightsabers, but with old-fashioned problem-solving and risk-taking. This shows that he can still be a hero without those extra tools, and his growth isn't solely dependent on those.Theme: Explored
