1.Story Beat: OpeningMark and Erica are out on a date. Mark goes on and on about how important it is for him to get into a final club. Erica breaks up with him on the spot, citing him being an asshole as the reason why.Notes: Mark's narcissism and brutal honesty tend to alienate those who care for him. This is the first of many instances where this happens.Theme: Stated

Eduardo is hesitant, but helps Mark out anyways. Mark sends out links to the completed website - "FaceMash" - to just a few people, knowing that it'll spread across campus.Notes: Eduardo will go against his better judgement in order to help his friends.
7.Male students check out FaceMash, ranking girls and forwarding it on. Female students find it disgusting. It's catching fire across Harvard and BU.
8.Erica's roommate sees Mark's blog post and shows it to Erica. A male student comes to her door and teases her about her breast size. She is mortified.

12.The Harvard Crew rows along the river. Identical twins Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss are 50 yards ahead of the rest.Notes: In the opening scene, Mark makes a joke about guys who row crew, so introducing the Winklevosses in a scene where they're rowing shows how polar opposite they are from Mark, without even needing any words.
13.Divya meets Cameron and Tyler for breakfast. He shows them an article in The Crimson about a sophomore who took down Harvard's network with a website he made in a matter of hours while drunk. They think Mark could be the guy to bring their website idea to life.
14.Mark and Sy sit opposite the Winklevosses and their attorney.Notes: While nothing notable is discussed in this scene, it lets the audience know that the twins' role in Mark's story will become very prominent.
15.Mark sits before a room of Harvard admins. They read off a list of his offenses. They expect an apology but instead Mark demands recognition for pointing out their network's security flaws. He insults Mr. Cox in front of the Ad Board.Notes: If the opening scene didn't show his arrogance well enough, this one does the trick. He's not just insulting someone his own age whom he's angry with, he's insulting authority who are just trying to do their jobs.
16.Mark tells Eduardo that he got six months academic probation.
17.Mark and other students listen to the professor layout a complex networking solution problem. A girl passes a note to Mark which reads "u dick." He gets up to leave. Though Mark resents the notion that the twins look down upon him, he still agrees to work with them.Theme: Explored
20.The Winklevoss' attorney asks Mark if he agreed to work with them, but Mark says he doesn't remember if he said yes or not.Notes: As off-putting as the Winklevosses can be, it's easy to side with them in this scene, because we know that Mark is lying right to their faces.
21.Gretchen asks Mark when he approached Eduardo with the idea for Facebook. He tells her that it was at a fraternity party.
22.Mark enters the Caribbean Night party, looking for Eduardo. Eduardo tells him that he got punched by the Phoenix. Mark is clearly jealous.
Mark pulls him outside to discuss "his" idea for a social network, explaining how the core feature is exclusivity. He asks Eduardo for $1,000 as a startup investment, and they'd split ownership 70/30, making Eduardo CFO of the company. Eduardo agrees.Notes: The first signs of Mark's jealousy appear here.

Act III

As he's doing so, Christy sets her new silk scarf on fire and drops it onto the bed. Eduardo frantically finds the fire extinguisher and puts out the fire.
Mark tells Eduardo about Peter Thiel's huge investment, and explains that he needs to come out to California now to sign some documents. Eduardo agrees, and breaks up with Christy before he leaves.Notes: Once again, Eduardo is back in Mark's lap, believing that things will be better from here on out.
71.Mark meets with Facebook attorneys. They explain the new share structure and how Eduardo will soon own over 1.3 million shares, which equates to 34.4% of the company. They read through the breakdown of shares, which includes Sean Parker at 6.47%.
72.Eduardo expresses his regret in signing the documents without having his own lawyer look over them first. He believed that since the men in that meeting were attoneys for Facebook, then they were attorneys for him as well.
Crushed, he reminds Mark that he was his only friend.Theme: Stated

26.An envelope is slipped under Eduardo's door. He gets excited, knowing what's inside.
27.Eduardo enters. Mark greets him with an immediate request for more money. Eduardo agrees. He tells Mark he made the second cut with The Phoenix. Mark is clearly not excited for his friend, and goes back to working.Notes: Mark doesn't try to hide how he's not happy for Eduardo. Eduardo can tell, but he knows Mark, and he knows how blunt he can be, so it's easy for him to pass off this intense jealousy for Mark just being socially inept.Theme: Explored
28.Gage continues to read the emails Mark sent to Divya that continuously push the deadline back and excuse his lack of progress on the site.
29.Eduardo stands in a lineup of prospective Phoenix members. They're forced to stand in the freezing cold and answer trivia questions about Harvard University. If they answer wrong, they remove an article of clothing. Eduardo's done his homework, and he correctly answers the questions he's given.Notes: Through this scene, we see how much Eduardo wants to be a part of the Phoenix. Away from Mark, he's able to show that he's been preparing for this moment, more so than the others around him.
30.Gage brings into evidence the record of domain registration for thefacebook.com, which was about forty days after he met with the Winklevosses. Eduardo can't confirm that Mark had ever written a line of code for Harvard Connection.
31.Cameron reads an email from Mark, claiming that the functionality of the site was insufficient to draw an audience upon launch.
32.Gage continues outlining the email history between Divya and Mark, which clearly shows that Mark led them on, Mark claims that if they had any right to the idea, they'd have created it themselves.
33.Dustin asks Mark if he knows whether a girl he likes has a boyfriend. Mark has no clue, but it sparks an idea. He sprints out of the lab.
34.With Eduardo watching over his shoulder, Mark adds the Relationship Status feature to The Facebook.
Mark launches the site and asks Eduardo to give him the email addresses of the Phoenix members so they can send the Facebook link out. Eduardo is hesitant, as he doesn't want to ruin his reputation with them, but he gives in and offers them up.Notes: Mark not only uses Eduardo's connections for his own personal gain, but he expects it. He finds it strange that Eduardo's hesitant, which shows how common it is for Eduardo to put aside his own feelings or opinions to please Mark's.Theme: Explored
35.Divya's girlfriend tells him that she's just been sent the same link from seven different people. Divya takes a look at her laptop and sees The Facebook. Realizing the site is ripping off Harvard Connection, he rushes out of the room.
36.Divya tells the Winklevosses that Mark Zuckerberg stole their website, and it's been live for over 36 hours.
37.Cameron, Tyler, and Divya are outraged by Mark's actions. Cameron gets his dad and their family attorney on the phone while Tyler checks out thefacebook.com. Divya reads that 650 students signed up on the first day.
Tyler and Divya want to sue Mark for intellectual property theft, but Cameron insists that they can settle this as "gentlemen of Harvard" instead.Notes: This rift between the twins is super important because not only does it help to distinguish one from the other, it also creates conflict within this plot thread alone, and it isn't relying on any other characters to come in and fuel said conflict.
38.Gage proves that Mark knew the Winklevosses were wealthy and could easily afford to pay the $1,000 that Mark asked Eduardo for. Mark says that he asked Eduardo instead of the Winklevosses because he wanted to be partners with Eduardo, his best friend.
Divya explains how The Facebook blew up, turning Mark into the biggest thing on campus.Theme: Symbolized
39.Mark and Eduardo are attending a lecture by Bill Gates. A girl sitting behind Eduardo, Christy, recognizes Mark and suggests that her and her friend grab drinks with Mark and Eduardo later.
40.Mark is approached by fellow students, who compliment him on The Facebook. Mark is unphased.Notes: Mark doesn't care about building social relationships with people "below" him, since it won't increase his social status.Theme: Challenged
41.Eduardo thinks it's time to monetize the site, but Mark says it's too soon - the site is "cool", they don't need to destroy that image with advertisements. Eduardo finds a cease-and-desist letter from the Winklevosses that he was unaware of. He asks Mark if he stole their idea, but Mark claims that he didn't.
42.Gage reads the letter that Mark sent to the Winklevosses after receiving the cease-and-desist, in which Mark claims that he expressed doubts about their website during their first meeting. The twins call bullshit.
When Mark's mind drifts elsewhere, Gage asks Mark if he feels he deserves his full attention. Mark responds in a rude, condescending manner, calling into question the IQ of not only the twins, but everyone else in the room.
43.Mark asks Eduardo what the girls' names were. Excited, Eduardo tells him, and reminds him that they want to have drinks tonight.
44.Christy and Eduardo hook up in a bathroom stall, while Mark and Alice hook up in another.Notes: Mark reaps the benefits of Facebook. It's exactly what he wanted - to be viewed as cool by those with a higher social status than him.Theme: Challenged
45.Mark spots Erica sitting at a table with a group of friends. He approaches her and attempts to pull her aside to talk. She doesn't get up from her seat, and instead lists off all of the horrible things he did to her.Notes: Mark still doesn't understand the severity of what he did to Erica.Theme: Explored
46.Mark wants to expand The Facebook to Yale and Columbia, and get a story published about it in BU's student paper. Eduardo suggests that they expand to Stanford as well, to gain exposure in Palo Alto.
47.Marilyn walks in to find Mark alone, working on his laptop. She comments on how much he must hate the Winklevosses. Mark claims that he doesn't hate anybody, and that they aren't suing him for intellectual property theft, but rather they're suing him because things didn't go their way for the first time in their lives.Theme: Challenged
48.Divya learns that The Facebook is expanding to Yale, Columbia and Stanford, and he tells the twins that they have to file an injunction to take the site down immediately.
Cameron refuses to sue, and instead they decide to accuse Mark of violating the Harvard Code of Conduct, which states that a student cannot steal from another student.
49.Story Beat: MidpointSean Parker wakes up in a Stanford girl's apartment. He tells her that he's the founder of Napster, a music downloading platform. He sees that her laptop browser is open to thefacebook.com. Amy tells him that it's only been on their campus for 2 weeks, but it's super popular and addictive. Sean decides to track down Mark.Notes: Immediately upon seeing Facebook, Sean sets out to find Mark, almost like a predator and prey. He knows what he wants and he'll get it - but contrary to Mark, he'll do it with charm and style.
50.The Winklevosses meet with the President of Harvard University. They attempt to plead their case with Mr. Summers but are shot down for using their father's connections to try and receive special treatment.
51.Eduardo answers questions about a trip him and Mark took to New York to meet potential advertisers. He says the meetings went horribly due to Mark's behavior.
52.Eduardo does his best to pitch Facebook to an ad exec. Mark ruins it with his disinterest and rude, childish behavior.Notes: Instead of reasoning with Eduardo, Mark resorts to sabotaging and embarrassing him.
53.Eduardo tells Gretchen that the last meeting on their trip was the only one Mark was excited for.
54.Mark, Eduardo and Christy meet with Sean Parker. Though Sean is able to charm Mark and Christy, Eduardo stays skeptical of him. Sean sides with Mark on the question of whether or not to advertise, and follows it up by saying that their website could become a billion dollar company.
Right as he leaves, Sean tells Mark to drop the "The" and make it just "Facebook."Notes: Sean enters the room looking like the exact person Mark strives to be. Mark tees up questions that intentionally pass off Eduardo's opinions as wrong, throwing him under the bus immediately.Theme: Symbolized
55.With Sean sharing the same opinion, Mark is now adamant that they won't put advertisements on Facebook, even though Eduardo clearly disagrees.Notes: All it took was one dinner for the wedge to be driven into their relationship. Mark now has someone to back him up, something he never gave Eduardo the chance to have, which make his arguments even stronger.
56.Sy brings up an article from The Crimson accusing Eduardo of animal cruelty - torturing a chicken - an example of Eduardo being potentially harmful to the success of Facebook, which would be legitimate grounds for termination. Eduardo insists that the story was blown out of proportion, and all he did was feed pieces of chicken to a chicken, something that he didn't understand would be viewed as "forced cannibalism".
57.Mark grills Eduardo over the scathing Crimson article. Mark asks Eduardo for more money, telling him that he'll be hiring interns and setting up shop in Palo Alto for the summer. Eduardo knows this is Sean's influence and begs Mark not to listen to him.Notes: It's easy to see that Mark enjoys having Eduardo plead his innocence to him. It's a way for him to carry out the idea that he's the boss, he's in charge, and he could fire whomever he wants, whenever he wants, for a reason as small as one highly exaggerated article. Eduardo's fate is in Mark's hands, and he loves it.
58.Mark hosts a wild drinking party/coding competition to select the next Facebook interns. Eduardo gives Mark access to a bank account he created and put $18,000 into, in order to fund Mark's summer in California.
59.Gretchen asks Eduardo why he would give Mark so much money after expressing concern over him moving the company to California, to which Eduardo responds that he thought him and Mark were partners, and he wanted to be a team player.
60.The Facebook team has fun at their new place, gliding down a zip-line attached to the chimney and jumping into the pool. One of the interns has a go at the zip-line and takes down part of the chimney with him.
The doorbell rings, and it's Sean Parker. Though he initially came over just to see if his neighbors were ok, he's pleasantly surprised to see that Mark has now set up shop in California.Theme: Explored
61.Mark informs Sean that Eduardo is in New York, and won't be coming out to California. Sean's a bit surprised, but he's clearly happy about the news.Notes: Sean senses Eduardo's absence as his opportunity to infiltrate the company. Now with no one around to disagree with him, he can have Mark wrapped around his finger in no time.
62.Sean finds a shared experience between him and Mark - Sean started Napster because he wanted a girl to like him, Mark started FaceMash because a girl broke up with him.
Sean plants the seed of doubt in Mark's mind that Eduardo shouldn't be involved in Facebook - Eduardo's all the way in New York, but the company is in California now. Eduardo will probably be a great businessman, but does he live and breathe Facebook like Mark does?Theme: Explored
63.The Winklevosses compete with the Harvard team in the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta, but lose to the Dutch Hollandia Roeiclub.
64.Cameron and Tyler apologize to their father for losing the race. They're then approached by Mr. Kenwright, who informs them that his daughter at Cambridge has just watched video of the race on a website called Facebook. It's with this news that they discover that Facebook is now international.
65.Tyler tells Cameron that they've tried everything they could to take down Mark, and the only option they have left is to sue. Cameron finally agrees.Notes: The Winklevoss storyline ends here - with the decision to sue. We don't need to see anything else, because we've already seen almost the whole case play out.
66.Eduardo knocks on the door and Sean answers it. A tired and disappointed Eduardo explains that Mark was supposed to pick him up from the airport an hour ago. Mark enters, acting like nothing's wrong.
Sean mentions a meeting that he set up with a major VC. Eduardo is angry that Sean is having anything to do with the business end of the company. Sean belittles Eduardo's efforts to find advertisers for the site.Theme: Symbolized
67.Story Beat: Plot Point 2Mark and Eduardo find some privacy in the hallway. Mark asks how Eduardo's internship is going. Eduardo reminds Mark that he quit his internship the first day, something he had previously told him.
Mark asks about Christy, and Eduardo reveals that he's scared of her because of how crazy, jealous, and irrational she is.
Eduardo pleads to Mark that he doesn't want Sean as a representative of the company, but Mark doesn't budge, and tells him that if he doesn't move out to California, he'll get left behind.Theme: Stated
68.Eduardo freezes the bank account that he set up for Mark's business expenses.Notes: Eduardo finally has a moment of clarity, and steps away from Mark. He takes control, comes to his senses, and realizes that he shouldn't keep supporting someone who doesn't care about him. But it doesn't last long.
Mark and Sean pull up, and Mark steps out wearing a bathrobe and pajamas. Sean prepares him for an investor meeting. The goal, however, is not to attract new investment, but to have Mark do Sean's bidding and tell the head partner, Mitchell Manningham, that "Sean Parker says fuck you!", then immediately walk out.Notes: Mark is becoming a pawn in Sean's petty squabbles with those who've burned him in the past.
75.Eduardo recounts that Mark invited him out to California for the millionth member party, and said that they also need to have a business meeting as well. But Eduardo claims that the actual reasoning for the invite wasn't either of those - it was an ambush.
76.Eduardo meets with Facebook's attorney to sign more documents. He looks them over and storms out of the room, towards Mark. He takes Mark's laptop and smashes it onto the desk, demanding to know how much everyone's shares were diluted down to.Theme: Explored
77.Gretchen asks, one by one, the amount that each Facebook owner's shares were diluted. Eduardo's were the only ones, going down from 34.4% to .03%.Theme: Symbolized
78.Story Beat: ClimaxEduardo accuses Mark of setting him up, but Mark blames Eduardo for making a bad business decision. Sean confirms that Eduardo is officially no longer a part of Facebook, whether he signs those papers or not. Eduardo asks if this is about him getting into the Phoenix. When Mark doesn't reply, Eduardo realizes that Mark planted the story about the chicken in the Crimson, out of jealousy.
Eduardo tells Mark to lawyer up, because he's coming back for not just his missing 30%, but all of it. Sean tries to give Eduardo a $19,000 check drawn from the account he froze. Eduardo doesn't accept the pity check.
After Eduardo leaves, Facebook hits one million members.Notes: The juxtaposition between Eduardo getting completely screwed over by Mark and just moments later, having the site reach one million members shows that Mark may look like he's in a better place than he was, but he doesn't have a single real friend. He gained so much, but what he lost was more valuable than any of it.Theme: Stated
79.At the party, Sean accompanies a group of young college students, including their intern, Ashleigh, to an upstairs room. One of the girls lays on the table while another sets up a line of coke on her stomach.
Meanwhile, downstairs, the cops bust up the party. Sean steps outside of the room to see what's going on, then runs back in and wipes the coke off of her stomach. His efforts weren't enough, as the cops take one look at his hands and see remnants of the coke. They also discover that everyone in the room is underage, except for Sean.
80.Sean calls Mark from jail to break the bad news. Mark anticipates how bad the public reaction will be. Sean floats the idea that Eduardo was somehow involved. Mark hangs up.Notes: And with Sean in trouble, Mark has now lost the person he looks up to the most. The friend that he thought could replace Eduardo ended up being a temporary solution.Theme: Symbolized
81.Mark sits alone at his laptop. When Marilyn walks in, he tells her that he's not a bad guy.
Mark asks her if she'd like to grab a bite. She can't. She tells Mark that he will most likely have to settle and pay extra so they'll sign a non-disclosure agreement, since if the case went to trial, a jury wouldn't side with him. Before leaving she tells him that she sincerely thinks he's not an asshole.Notes: Mark makes his first attempt at a positive social interaction that won't directly benefit him. Something as simple as asking someone out to eat feels so massive in this moment.Theme: Challenged
82.Story Beat: ResolutionAfter Marilyn leaves, Mark logs into Facebook and searches for Erica Albright. He finds her and sends her a Friend Request. He leans back and steadily refreshes the page to see if she's accepted.Notes: Though Erica doesn't have a lot of screen time, the film starts and ends with her. She's the reason he created Facebook, the reason he kept expanding and improving it, and she could be the only thing that brings him back down to earth.Theme: Challenged
