Act I
1.INT. restaurant - MORNINGStory Beat: Opening ImageLouise calls her friend Thelma about a fishing trip they're leaving for tonight. Thelma confesses that she's yet to ask her husband, Darryl, for permission to go. Louise is annoyed, stating that Darryl is Thelma's husband, not her father.Theme: Explored
2.I/E. thelma's house - MORNINGDarryl gets upset with Thelma for speaking too loudly. Thelma decides to not ask him for permission to go on the trip, instead asking him if he wants anything special for dinner, to which he replies that he doesn't care.Notes: Though Thelma is loyal to Darryl, her rebellious side peeks out when she doesn't tell him about her trip. She knows he'd say no and is afraid to disobey him, so she's not "technically" being disloyal just by not informing him of her plans.Theme: Explored
3.EXT. RESTAURANT - DAYLouise pulls out of the parking lot in a green '66 T-Bird.
4.INT. LOUISE'S APARTMENT - DAYLouise packs for the trip, keeping her belongings neatly organized in Ziploc bags within her suitcase. She calls her boyfriend, Jimmy, but he doesn't answer. She tips over a framed photo of Jimmy, face-down.Notes: It's revealed that Louise has marital issues of her own, something that might not have been apparent when she talks to Thelma in the opening scene. With how strong-minded she seems, it's easy to assume that she'd be able to get herself out of a bad marriage, but she fails to take the same advice that she gives.
5.INT. THELMA'S HOUSE - DAYThelma packs for the trip, tossing her whole wardrobe into her suitcases with no rhyme or reason. She pulls a handgun out of her nightstand and drops it into her bag.Notes: These two scenes back-to-back show, without words, the differences between Thelma and Louise. Something simple as packing luggage lets the audience know that Thelma is spontaneous and sometimes careless, while Louise is organized and plans ahead.
It also establishes the gun in a way that seems unimportant. It's funny, the way that Thelma nonchalantly drops the gun into her purse, so it's easy to think that its only purpose is humor. The gun isn't established as something that will become important later on, which makes it more surprising when it does.
6.EXT. THELMA'S HOUSE - DAYLouise picks Thelma up. They shove Thelma's bags into the T-Bird and take a Polaroid of themselves.
7.int. car - dayThelma and Louise start their drive. Thelma asks Louise to take care of the gun, since she doesn't know how to use it. Surprised that Thelma brought it with her, Louise tells her to put in her purse. Thelma reveals that she didn't ask Darryl for permission to leave, since she knew he'd say no, and instead left him a note. Louise laughs in response, knowing the trouble she'll be in when she gets back.Notes: Another key moment with the gun - it's now in Louise's possession. Again, it's not made a big deal of, it's just Louise's natural reaction, then they move on.Theme: Explored
8.INT. CAR - country road - DAYThelma asks Louise if they can stop somewhere for a little bit. Louise reluctantly agrees.
9.EXT. silver bullet - nightThelma and Louise pull up to the Silver Bullet, a bar.
10.INT. silver bullet - NIGHTThelma orders a drink and convinces Louise to do the same. Harlan approaches them, flirting with Thelma. Louise gets him to leave them alone, but Thelma is receptive to his advances and joins him on the dance floor. When Louise heads to the bathroom, an inebriated Thelma gets dizzy. Harlan suggests they go outside for some fresh air.
11.EXT. SILVER BULLET PARKING LOT - NIGHTStory Beat: Inciting IncidentHarlan brings Thelma to the parking lot and tries to get under her dress. When Thelma protests, he hits her and tries to rape her. Louise appears, holding a gun pointed at Harlan's face. He claims that they were just having some fun, but it's clear to Louise that that wasn't the case. Thelma hides behind Louise and they start to leave, until Harlan declares that he should have gone ahead and raped Thelma. This angers Louise and she shoots him in the chest. Thelma and Louise get in the car and drive off.Notes: Louise prefers to do things her own way, for her own self-interest, but she's also fiercely protective of Thelma, especially since (we later learn) she went through a similar traumatic event herself.Theme: Explored
Act II
12.EXT. CAR - NIGHTThelma suggests that they call the cops and explain everything that happened. Louise objects to the idea, saying that everyone in the bar saw her and Harlan dancing all night, so no one would believe her.Notes: Louise's last line is crucial in understanding why they end up running from law enforcement instead of working with them. Louise speaks from experience, so it's not just an assumption that police wouldn't help, it's knowledge.Theme: Explored
13.EXT. interstate - NIGHTThelma pulls over so Louise can throw up. Louise tells her that everything will be fine.Theme: Explored
14.EXT. TRUCK STOP - restaurant - NIGHTThelma and Louise pull up to a truck stop.
15.INT. truck stop - restaurant - nightLouise tells Thelma that if she hadn't been so concerned about having fun, they wouldn't be in the position they're in now. Thelma takes offense, realizing that Louise thinks this is all her fault.Notes: Louise can't help but blame Thelma for what happened. She's not blaming her for the incident itself, but for them showing up to the bar in the first place. She deviated from Louise's plan, and now look at what happened. It creates a rift between the two of them.
16.EXT. TRUCK STOP - NIGHTThelma calls Darryl, but he doesn't answer.
17.EXT. SILVER BULLET PARKING LOT - 4:00 A.M.
Act III
61.INT. THELMA'S HOUSE - DAYLouise was on the phone long enough to where the policemen are able to trace her call. Hal demands that Max and his team take him with them when they hunt down the girls, hoping that his presence would allow for negotiations with Thelma and Louise rather than violence.Notes: Hal's willingness to negotiate gives Thelma and Louise a reason to consider not running, which is crucial. If he ordered for violence, Thelma and Louise really have no other option but to run. But since Hal believes that they're victims, and he's trying to get them the least amount of punishment possible, it means that they have to make a choice. Their desire to stay together and be free is so strong that it outweighs any of Hal's tempting offers.
62.EXT. pay phone - DAYThelma asks Louise to not make a deal with Hal, since she doesn't want to go back to her old life. Louise assures her that she won't.Notes: Louise was the one spearheading this mission to Mexico up until this point, but Thelma's now the one who refuses to go home. Being on the road with Louise has made her realize how restrictive her life with Darryl is. And whether going home means going back to Darryl or going to a jail cell, she'd rather do anything but.Theme: Stated
63.EXT. DESERT - DAYThelma and Louise fantasize about their life in Mexico. They run into the same truck driver from earlier, who asks them if they're ready to "get serious". They say yes and lead him off the side of the road.Theme: Explored
64.EXT. side of road - dayThe truck driver gets out of his truck and approaches Thelma and Louise, who tell him off about his disgusting behavior. When he refuses to apologize, Louise shoots out his tires, then her and Thelma start shooting the tankers, which causes the truck to explode. They drive off, leaving him there.

The bar parking lot is now a crime scene, with Harlan's body being taken away in a body bag. Detective Hal questions the waitress that served Thelma and Louise. She tells Hal about them, but insists that neither of them would be the type to murder someone.
Notes: When Hal is introduced, he's not given a "good cop" or "bad cop" moment, he's simply doing his job. He doesn't have any pre-existing biases against the girls, which makes him a sympathetic antagonist. He's an antagonist not because he's a villain who's out for blood, but because he just gets in the way of the girls' plans.
Theme: Explored
18.int. TRUCK STOP - DAYLouise calls Jimmy and gets nothing but a voicemail.
19.exT. CAR - DAwnLouise asks Thelma how much money she has. After a $20 bill flies out of the car, Thelma's answer of $41 doesn't satisfy Louise, who says that they'll need more money.Theme: Explored
20.ext. motel - dayLouise tells Thelma that she'll figure out what to do. She calls Jimmy, who answers, and she asks him to wire her the $6,700 in her bank account to a bank in Oklahoma City. Upon his hesitancy, she asks him if he loves her, and he responds with an unsure "yes".Notes: Louise leverages her and Jimmy's rocky relationship in order to get what she needs. By asking Jimmy if he loves her, she's making it seem like if he doesn't wire her the money, it means he doesn't love her, and she'll leave. This manipulation tactic is something she would likely frown upon if done to her or Thelma, but has to justify it in the moment to save herself.
21.EXT. motel pool - DAYLouise grabs Thelma and rushes her into the car. They drive off.
22.INT. POLICE STATION - major's office - DAYHal's superior suggests that even if the girls didn't kill Harlan, they must have witnessed the crime. They put out an all-points bulletin for Thelma and Louise and let the FBI in on it, due to the potential that they've fled the state.
23.INT. CAR - DAYLouise tells Thelma about the wire transfer and that she plans to flee to Mexico. Louise wants an answer as to whether or not Thelma will join her, but Thelma can't make up her mind.Theme: Explored
24.ext. small country town - DAYLouise calls Jimmy, who tells her that did the transfer, and gives her the location of the motel she needs to go to to receive the money. Thelma calls Darryl at Louise's request. She tells him that she'll be home the next night. Darryl tries to threaten her to come home earlier, but is unable to drum up any real reason as to why she should. Thelma tells him to go fuck himself. After the call, Thelma bumps into J.D., a hitchhiker.Notes: In this moment, Thelma uses what she's learned from Louise and actually stands up to Darryl, and it's important that we see how it isn't easy for her. She doesn't become an independent badass in a matter of hours, she's still clawing her way out of an abusive relationship and is very vulnerable because of it. And that makes it the perfect time to introduce J.D. She doesn't just cling onto J.D. because he's cute, it's because she's feeling down and he lifts her up. He's (seemingly) very respectful towards her, which is already a far cry from how Darryl treats her.Theme: Explored
25.EXT. CAR - DAYJ.D. asks Thelma if she can give him a ride. Louise refuses and speeds off. Thelma tells Louise that she's decided to join her in heading to Mexico.Notes: The last thing Louise wants is another man around to create more problems.Theme: Explored
26.INT. police station - DAYHal goes over a list of every registered T-Bird in the state. Louise's name scrolls past.
27.INT. CAR - DAYLouise refuses to drive through Texas to get to Mexico. Confused as to why they'd take the long route while running for their lives, Thelma tries to get Louise to tell her what happened to her in Texas that makes her avoid the entire state. Louise doesn't give it up.Notes: With how logical Louise usually is, this illogical plan to not drive through Texas garners immediate suspicion from Thelma. The vague reasoning Louise gives her isn't enough - Thelma knows there's more, but stops prying when Louise shuts her down.
28.ext. LOUISE'S apartment complex - DAYHal lets himself into Louise's apartment and looks around.
29.INT. CAR - DAYThelma and Louise drive down a long stretch of road, singing along to a song.
30.INT. RESTAURANT - DAYHal enters the restaurant Louise works at. He flashes his badge and asks to speak to the manager.
31.ext. crossroads - DAYThelma and Louise pass by J.D. on the side of the road. Thelma pleads for Louise to pick him up. She agrees.Notes: Louise once again gives into Thelma's pleas in order to make her happy. It's her weak spot.
32.exT. THELMA'S HOUSE - DAYHal tells Darryl about the murder and that witnesses at the bar saw Louise's car speed off the night of, with a passenger who they presume to be Thelma. Darryl is practically speechless.
33.ext. rural highway - DAYThelma tells J.D. about Darryl and Louise's hatred for him, also saying that Darryl is the only man she's ever been with. J.D. points out police cars up ahead, causing Louise to take an abrupt turn to avoid them.Notes: From this conversation, we learn more about why Thelma hasn't left Darryl. Since he's the only man she's ever been with, she feels a sort of dependence on him. She doesn't know what life is like without Darryl, and likely fears the thought of it, the thought of uncertainty. Darryl provides what she sees as stability and normalcy, which causes her to be able to look past his many, many flaws. Louise, looking from the outside in, notices his flaws more than anything, and there's nothing he or Thelma could do to change how she feels about him.Theme: Explored
34.INT. THELMA'S HOUSE - DAYHal tells Max over the phone that the prints on the trunk of Harlan's car match Thelma's, the gun that is missing from her home could have been used to shoot him, and she and Louise never showed up to the cabin they were headed for.
35.ext. shaw's siesta motel - duskLouise heads into the motel to collect the transferred money and is surprised to see Jimmy waiting there for her.
36.EXT. MOTEL - NIGHTThelma is just as shocked by Jimmy's sudden appearance as Louise was. They drop off J.D. at the motel.
37.INT. thelma's MOTEL ROOM - NIGHTLouise orders Thelma to guard the money in her motel room, also revealing that she's not going to tell Jimmy about their plan.Theme: Explored
38.INT. jimmy's room - nightJimmy gets aggressive when Louise refuses to tell him what's going on. He hands her an engagement ring, confessing that he's afraid of losing her. Louise breaks up with him as gently as she can, saying that it's time to let go.Notes: This relationship dynamic is far different from Thelma and Darryl's. Jimmy truly loves Louise, and he's incredibly scared of losing her, which causes him to act on impulse whenever he fears that she's getting further away. But these "romantic" gestures that he thought would mend their relationship - showing up unannounced, proposing - only have a negative effect on Louise, who is laser-focused on getting her and Thelma to safety.
Jimmy also isn't wrong for prying about what happened. Contrary to Darryl, who just demanded to know where Thelma was for no real reason, Louise asked Jimmy to wire her money to a motel, so he feels that he should know what it's for and what's going on. Louise gets upset when he doesn't just blindly follow her, so it can be assumed that he's been obeying her requests without question for years.Theme: Explored
39.INT. THELMA'S MOTEL ROOM - NIGHTJ.D. knocks at Thelma's door and she invites him in. After accidentally mentioning his parole officer, he reveals that he robs convenience stores. He demonstrates the method in which he does so, and the two of them sleep together.
40.I/E. SIESTA MOTEL - DAWNA nervous Louise looks at Jimmy, asleep.
41.INT. SIESTA COFFEE SHOP - dawnJimmy promises Louise that he won't tell anyone he saw her. He lets her keep the engagement ring before he heads out.
Thelma enters, acting strange. She tells Louise about her night with J.D., and Louise is happy for her. But when Thelma mentions that J.D.'s taking a shower in her room, Louise asks Thelma where the money is. Thelma says that it's in her room, causing Louise to run out of the cafe, Thelma trailing right behind.
42.ext. motel parking lot - DAYStory Beat: MidpointThey get back into the room to find the money gone. Louise breaks down in tears while Thelma tries to reassure her that it's going to be ok.Notes: Thelma has fallen into yet another trap. She chooses to see the good in people, and it rarely works out in her favor. It's not her fault that the men around her take advantage of her, but she's naturally more susceptible to trouble than Louise is, since Louise fends off strangers left and right, and refuses to invite anyone in.
43.Ext. THELMA'S HOUSE - DAYHal and other policemen pull up to Thelma's house and are welcomed in by Darryl. Hal tells Darryl that they've tapped his phone in case Thelma calls, so they can figure out her location.
44.EXT. CONVENIENCE STORE - dayThelma and Louise pull over in front of a market and Thelma heads in. As Louise sulks in the car, Thelma comes running out of the market, yelling at Louise to drive. Thelma hops into the car and Louise drives them away.
45.INT. CAR - DAYAs they flee the scene, Thelma tells Louise that she robbed the store, causing Louise to freak out.Notes: Thelma did what she could to make it up to Louise. Though she broke the law in the process, she told Louise she was going to fix it, and she did.Theme: Explored
46.INT. POLICE STATION - interrogation room - DAYDarryl and policemen watch the security camera footage of Thelma's robbery. She'd robbed the store in the same way that J.D. had demonstrated earlier.
47.EXT. rural road - DAYThelma and Louise speed down a road in an attempt to put distance between themselves and the police. They pass by a truck driver who makes lewd gestures directed at them.Notes: The addition of the gross truck driver helps to show that their situation wasn't caused by one singular man, but because of the world we live in. If men are raised thinking that they're entitled to a woman's body, it breeds entire generations that behave like this man, or like Harlan or Darryl. All of them have the same set of beliefs when it comes to their relationships with women, they just act upon them in different ways.
48.EXT. jimmy's apartment building - DAYJimmy gets stopped by a police officer outside of the apartment.
49.EXT. dirt road - dayLouise tells Thelma that she'll need to call Darryl, but she'd have to hang up if he seems like he knows anything, assuming that the police got to him and tapped his phone.
50.INT. POLICE STATION - NIGHTJ.D. is brought in to see Hal and Max for questioning after being identified by Jimmy. Hal asks J.D. if he thinks that Thelma would have committed armed robbery if he hadn't stolen all of their money.Notes: Hal and Max understand that Thelma and Louise aren't true criminals, but rather victims themselves. The situations they've gotten into have forced them into a corner, where their choice is to break the law for a chance at freedom, or submit to law enforcement and risk imprisonment.Theme: Explored
51.EXT. GAS STATION - NIGHTThelma and Louise fill up their tank and prepare to call Darryl.
52.ext. pay phone - nightThelma calls Darryl, whose out-of-character enthusiasm makes it obvious that the phone is tapped. Louise makes Darryl hand the phone over to Hal, who tells Louise that she and Thelma aren't charged with murder yet, and are only wanted for questioning - though Thelma would be charged with armed robbery. He warns that he doesn't think they'll make it to Mexico, which makes Louise realize that J.D. ratted them out.Theme: Explored
53.EXT. PAY PHONE - NIGHTLouise gets upset with Thelma for telling J.D. where they were headed and instructs her to keep her mouth shut from now on.Notes: Thelma's instinct to trust everyone has led them into yet another bump in the road. Louise finds it hard to understand why Thelma can't just keep her head down and her mouth shut.Theme: Explored
54.INT. THELMA'S HOUSE - NIGHTThe police gather around the television, passing the time as they wait for another call.
55.INT. lonely road - NIGHTThelma and Louise drive through the night.
56.EXT. desert highway - DAwnThelma laughs thinking about the look on Harlan's face after Louise shot him. Louise doesn't laugh along with her.
Thelma asks if Louise if the reason she hates Texas is because she was raped there. Louise tells Thelma to drop it.Notes: Thelma discovers what happened to Louise in Texas, but Louise didn't tell her. Louise's inability to laugh with Thelma in this moment was all it took. This reveals a lot about their relationship:
- Thelma and Louise are so close that Thelma can figure out something about Louise just from the absence of a laugh
- Louise refuses to tell anyone, not even her closest friends, about past trauma. Thelma now knows what happened, so Louise doesn't have to hide it anymore, but she still does.Theme: Explored
57.EXT. highway - DAYLouise gets pulled over for speeding. When the cop takes Louise into his car, Thelma appears with a gun to his head. She instructs Louise to steal the cop's gun and she leads the officer to the trunk of his car, which she politely asks him to get into after shooting some air holes into the top. They close the trunk and take off in the T-Bird, leaving him on the side of the road.Notes: Now that Thelma's broken the law once, she has zero hesitation about doing it again. She's getting herself and Louise into more and more trouble, but it seems like, in some way, she knows they won't end up behind bars for it.
58.INT. THELMA'S kitchen - MORNINGMax tells Hal that he can't tell if Thelma and Louise are real smart or real lucky. Hal responds that smarts only get you so far, and luck always runs out.Notes: Hal foreshadowing the ending.
59.INT. CAR - DAYLouise blames herself for the trouble they got into. Thelma reassures her that they would've been worse off going to the police, and throws Louise's reasoning for not doing so back at her - no one would've believed that Thelma wasn't asking for it.Theme: Stated
60.INT. roadside rest station - morningLouise calls Hal. She tells him that the whole thing was an accident. He tells her that she's going to have to come in for questioning or she and Thelma will be charged with murder. He also tells her that he knows what happened to her in Texas.Theme: Challenged
Notes: Louise finally confirms what Thelma already knew. She doesn't go into any further detail, but just that confirmation is something Thelma thought she'd never receive.
Theme: Explored
65.EXT. new mexico side of road - dayA bicyclist stops by the abandoned police car. The police officer yells from the trunk to grab the keys, but the bicyclist blows smoke through one of the air holes instead.
66.EXT. desert road - DAYPolice helicopters circle the truck driver and his demolished truck.
67.INT. THELMA'S HOUSE - DAYDarryl listens to a police radio and hears Thelma described as "armed and very dangerous".
68.EXT. helicopter - dayHal and Max make their way from a plane into a police helicopter.
69.int. car - DAYPolice cars drive by on the other side of the highway. Thelma instructs Louise to drive off the road, just in case the police are looking for them. Without Thelma and Louise noticing, the police cut over to the other side of the road, now in pursuit of them.Notes: Their luck is running out.
70.EXT. desert road - DAYPolice cars chase after Thelma and Louise, who aren't slowing down.
71.EXT. desert ghost town - DAYThelma and Louise drive underneath a low overpass, and when the police try to follow them, one of the cars gets stuck under it, preventing them from continuing their pursuit.
72.INT. CAR - DAYThelma and Louise make it back onto the road, sitting in stunned silence before bursting out into laughter.
73.EXT. desert - dayThelma and Louise drive past a canyon, where a helicopter is flying low enough to not be seen by them.
74.INT. CAR - DAYLouise almost drives right into the Grand Canyon, but is able to stop the car in time. As they sit and admire the scenery, a police helicopter, containing Hal and Max, flies up from out of the canyon. Thelma and Louise try to escape, but are blocked by a parade of police cars entering the scene.
75.int. car - DAYPolice aim rifles at Thelma and Louise. Hal pleads to Max to not let them shoot. As the police instruct Thelma and Louise to cut off their engine and put their hands up, Thelma suggests to Louise that instead of getting caught, they should keep going. Off of Louise's confusion, Thelma gestures towards the Grand Canyon and tells her to go. Louise asks if she's sure, and Thelma says yes. They kiss before Louise starts driving towards the canyon. Hal chases after the car.
Thelma and Louise hold hands as Louise floors it and drives the car off the edge, into the canyon.Notes: Thelma and Louise make their final choice - they'd rather not live anymore than go back to their old lives, or to jail. Their lives were never going to get any better, so instead of being at the mercy of the judicial system, they decide to take charge of their own lives one last time.Theme: Symbolized
